Newborn Hair Loss

Many babies are born with lovely thick heads of shiny gorgeous hair only for it to fall out a few weeks after their birth. Many parents are shocked when this happens but there is no need to worry – it’s a very natural process which is a result of your babies changing hormone levels in the weeks and months after their birth.

When in the womb babies have relatively high hormone levels as they are passed on by their mums. After the birth there is a drop in the levels of these hormones and this causes a slow in hair growth. After a few months new hair will begin to grow and will push out old hair follicles resulting in patchy or bald areas. This won’t last long as this new hair will grow and fill in any patchy areas quite quickly. Babies hair loss usually settles down within the first six months so if you feel your baby is still losing or starts to lose a lot of hair after six months of age it’s no harm to get it checked out by your GP. Babies can have particularly patchy areas if they rest on one side etc a lot of the time as the friction can cause delicate hair to fall out. This will resolve itself once they start to sit up and move about a bit more.
