Hospital bag check list!

WonderBaba Hospital bag kitExpectant mums should consider getting their hospital bag together at about 34 weeks. I’ve compiled a list of useful items and I hope it’s of some help! Space is so tight in hospitals that it’s a military operation trying to fit everything in! Feel free to contact me on the wonderbaba Facebook page if you think there is anything I have missed and I’ll be happy to add it on! I have also put together all of the ‘pharmacy items’ into one handy ‘WonderBaba Hospital Kit’ which is now available to be ordered online by clicking here!  It takes all of the hassle out of ‘hospital bag shopping’ and leaves you spare time to focus on the more appealing things like cute baby clothes and fancy slippers!

So here is my full list of everything you will need for your hospital visit!

  • Medical notes including birth plan
  • Dressing gown
  • Slip on slippers – need to be slip on so that if your sore after a section etc you don’t need to lean over.
  • Socks – for labour – weirdly feet can get quite cold during labour!
  • Labour night dress or t shirt.
  • Lip balm
  • la-roche-posay-thermal-spring-water-150g-miltownWater spray – to cool your face and soothe you skin during labour and during the days after.
  • Snacks and drinks for you and your partner.
  • Books/magazines/ipod
  • Hair bobbins
  • Tens machine
  • Comfortable loose clothes for going home – with empty bump space!
  • Nursing bras
  • Breast pads
  • multi-mam-compresses-milltown-totalhealth-pharmacyMultimam compresses – these are brilliant for putting under a breast pad to soothe sore nipples for breast feeding mums – ask the midwives to keep them in the fridge on the ward and they will be even more soothing!
  • Toiletries for yourself.
  • Towels – dark colored – for yourself and the baby.
  • Old or cheap big knickers – the higher waisted the better – that way they will sit over a section wound if necessary and also hold a large maternity pad.
  • Earplugs/eye mask – for a noisy ward.
  • Sleepsuits/vests – approximately six of each – your partner can bring these home and bring you clean one if you need them.
  • dontwake meblueNappies -approx 6-8 per day.
  • Muslin cloths – approx 4 and have more at home your partner can bring in!
  • Hat for baby.
  • Going home outfit for baby.
  • Snowsuit for baby if it’s a winter baby.
  • Blanket.
  • Wipes/cotton wool (hospitals often insist you clean the babies bum with cotton wool and water – some people use water wipes as a compromise!)
  • Vaseline – make sure this is put on with the first nappy as the babies first poo contains a lot of meconium which is almost tar like and hard to get off if you haven’t put Vaseline on first!
  • Sanitary towels / maternity pads – the large green pharmacy maternity pads are best for the first day or two but after that you may prefer to change to a thinner sanitary towel.
  • Change for parking.
  • Phone charger.
  • Pen.
  • Bibs.
  • lansinoh-hpa-lanolin-milltownpharmacyLansinoh cream – fantastic for sore nipples if breast feeding.
  • Arnica tabs – to reduce swelling and inflammation.
  • Scratch mitts
  • Cardigan for baby.
  • Baby sponge.
  • Drinks – for yourself and partner.
  • Plastic bags – handy to put dirty clothes in to give to partner to bring home as there’s not a lot of space in hospital lockers!
  • Sheet for crib – many hospital provides sheets and blankets but not all so check with your midwives.

Try to keep your bag with you from about 34-36 weeks incase of an early arrival!
