Tip! How long to keep sun cream!

Have a look at the back of your tube of sun cream to see how long it will remain good to use once it has been opened! This symbol indicates that the product is safe to use from twelve months from the day it’s opened! It’s good to get in the habit of writing the date you opened the tube on it with permanent marker so that you are sure the product you are using is still of sufficient quality to protect your child from sunburn – I know in our house we could have cream sitting there opened for years as the Irish weather does not exactly encourage you to finish a tube!! Obviously I understand it can seem expensive and extreme to replace cream every year but the length of time displayed in this symbol on the back of the tube is all the total time the manufacture can or will guarantee the SPF content of the sun protection. I’ve had a few people come into the pharmacy  (adults thankfully as there is nothing worse than seeing a sunburnt child) who have been unwillingly burnt by the sun after putting on what they thought was a good high factor sun cream which unfortunately turned out to be a couple of years old and the SPF had deteriorated to unknown quality.  It’s worth looking out for this symbol on your tubes and bottles and handy to write the opening date on the tube! Often sun cream has an expiry date printed on the bottle which could be a few years from now and the cream will remain safe to use until this date so long as it’s within 12 months of actually opening it. So if you have an unopened tube you may be able hold onto it for a couple of years!
