Hand foot and mouth disease – the aftermath!

We had hand, foot and mouth disease in the house a while ago – fun times…. Not so much!  Read my full hand, foot and mouth blog here –https://wonderbaba.ie/2015/09/22/hand-foot-and-mouth-disease-a-wonderbaba-guide/

I just wanted to highlight a common problem that occurs after this illness. One of my little girls  had significant damage to her nail bed due to the blisters forming on the skin under her nails. This means that whilst the symptoms and virus have passed – the signs still remain.

imageThis isn’t her hand in the picture because she won’t let me next or near her with the camera at the moment – but it is exactly what it looks like – the nails are slowly coming away from the skin and so peeling off .  This is know as onychomadesis.

To care for nails like this it is helpful not to pick at them or let your child pick at them or pull them off as they may cause a little cut which will leave the nail bed open to infection.

I would recommend using a nail clippers to clip excess nail off and then use a plaster to cover it if it is catching on things during the day or night.  This is especially important during the winter when you might not realise what is causing your child to be so cross when you are trying to get gloves on them!
