MenB Vaccine – Update!

31/7/16 – It has been announced that Bexsero will be included in the ‘new’ childhood immunisation programme.  This means that all babies born on or after the 1st October 2016 will be offered the vaccine as a part of their routine vaccination programme.  Any parent who wishes to get their child with an earlier birthday vaccinated will have to pay privately to do so. Children born before the 1st October 2016 will continue on the ‘old’ vaccination programme as normal.

07/07/2016 – Suppliers have informed us that Bexsero is currently a doctor only line so pharmacies are still unable to get stock but your doctor may be able! It is worth contacting your local GP to see if they have vaccines in stock even if your local pharmacy cannot currently get them.

10/3/16 – MenB Vaccine – Update!

Unfortunately the position remains as described below with no further information coming from the pharmacy wholesalers.

I will keep updating the blog with any information that becomes available.  We have a waiting list in place in www.milltownpharmacy.ie in the hope that even small amounts of stock will become available but as this product needs to be stored in the fridge this is only suitable for patients in the Dublin area as my pharmacy is in Dublin 6.  Other local pharmacies may offer the same service.  Don’t hesitate to get in touch with me by private message on the WonderBaba facebook page for further information or to be added to the list.

24/2/16 – MenB Vaccine – Update!

This seems to be one of those subjects that is almost impossible to get to the bottom of but after further investigation the information I have received has not been overly optimistic about an imminent return of a continuous supply of the MenB Vaccine (Bexsero).

I have been informed the lack of supply is due to an inability of the manufacturer to keep up with the global demand. They are working as hard as they can to remedy this or so I am led to believe. From what I can gather it may be well into the summer before a steady supply is returned to the market. There may possibly be an intermittent supply between now and then but nothing can be guaranteed by the manufacturer or distributors.

In the UK, supply is also limited and only patients who have already been vaccinated with the first part of the dose are being provided with the injection to complete or further their vaccination – i.e the vaccine is no longer being provided to all children under the immunisation schedule due to lack of availability.

Whilst this is frustrating considering the recent hype around the potential inclusion of Bexsero in the Irish childhood vaccination schedule it is worth remembering that bacterial meningitis is not common. The best we can do as parents is be educated with regards of the symptoms which can be a sign of a meningococcal infection and to seek medical attention if meningitis is suspected.

23/2/16 – There is a current shortage in the MenB Vaccine known as Bexsero.  Bexsero is not on the childhood immunisation schedule as of yet but as MenB accounts for almost 80% of bacterial meningitis cases in Ireland (2014) from what I have read it will hopefully soon be added.

Bexsero is available privately once you have a prescription from your doctor – but at the moment pharmacies are unable to obtain stock.  The distributors are not providing us with a date for its return as of yet but I will update this blog any time that I receive new information!  This is obviously frustrating as I know many parents want to vaccinate their children with this relatively new vaccine.  The main thing to remember is that whilst meningitis is extremely dangerous it is not actually very common – so have a read of this blog in the meanwhile and you will know how to spot the signs and when to seek medical attention – https://wonderbaba.ie/2016/02/18/meningitis-do-you-know-what-youre-looking-for/
